Buying from Japan - where do I start?

I’d buy a Z ballpoint for $30 in a heartbeat.

Assuming it was mint, I suppose.

It wasn’t mint, and I’m not particularly fond of the color (kind of a coral/pinkish/orange hue) but I wanted to check one out.
Yes - definitely looking for a MP but waiting for one I like at the right cost.

Edit: this is not a Platinum Z :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I have one of those square bodied yellow and green ballpoints that were made from corn that they sold in the 90s. Worth at least $1.75.

Crap. I was only kidding. I don’t have one of those although I’ve been looking for some for quite some time.

Thanks for clarifying that this is NOT a Platinum Z

I wasn’t gonna tell anyone.

But back to the fees, I think @dragon727 said days ago to keep it under $800

And if you can get the shipper to write your purchases up as Mechanical Pencils (tariff code 9608.40.4000).

Yeah, it looks to share the same mechanism as the Platinum Z. But the clip is wrong. Very weird. I’d never seen one of these before. I wonder what that white symbol is in the pattern.

Do you think this was an honest mistake by the seller? Or should i be adding this one to the ‘Do Not Buy From’ list?

Not sure, but I won’t be purchasing from them again.
Good news is the mrs likes it so not a complete loss.

If the Proxy would label the contents as Used Mech pencils the package value can be up to $1600 an not get customs taxed.

The one time I used FedEx with Zen, I got hit with customs fees because the package value was greater than $800.

As for ink pens: one ink pen is a red flag at customs. Ink falls under the Toxic Substances Control Act and you’ll have to provide a TSCA form for Customs, basically it’s a declaration of the offending item. I claimed it was an ink pen and that sufficed. BUT… if you have a pen in the mix, ship with DHL, Zen even suggests using DHL when you have a pen.

But… “ink pen” doesn’t that suggest liquid ink, as in a fountain pen? Surely ballpoint pens are thick, viscous, and sealed up. Absolutely no chance of toxicity.

Ink is ink, I would think a fountain pen filled with ink (if its that type) would be a red flag. I would assume anything with ‘ink’ in the name is subject.

But I disagree. Ink is not ink. Rollerball and gel pens are sold the world over. Shipped without problem. Same for old style ballpoint ink. It’s fountain pens that present a challenge with loose liquid easy to spill.

The pens (happened twice with FedEx via Hoyoyo) I was flagged for is also sold all over the world. US Customs is the authority on the matter.
