G’day Mates,
Anyone here keep an eye on the game down under?

I can’t say that I follow it but when the footie is on, I watch it. As an American who didn’t grow up with it I have some observations:
The very first time I heard “footie club” was in the amazing 1 season TV series “Deadloch”. Very much hoping for a season 2.
Well I’m a Kiwi so I know what it is, but of course I’m therefor also genetically pre-programmed to not really follow it.
Love Madeline Sami.
One our greatest talents, always enjoyed seeing her on stage
To address your observations:
Just waiting for the day you lot decide to take us up on our offer of joining our great nation. This trickle immigration is going to take centuries to have the same effect.
First I’ve heard of this show. This is a complete work of fiction - she does not say fuck or cunt anywhere near enough.
ETA I mean no offense to any of you fine people. Words only have power if we give it to them.
I have to watch this now.
Granted, the players are tough. They wear little or no protection. That is impressive. It leads one to wonder what shape the players will be in at 50. Actually I don’t have to wonder.
The scoring I expected to be able to figure out after a few games (matches? tests? wollywogs?), but it has so far defied understanding. I really like that there are underhand passes, dribbling, kicking, throwing, and a maneuver I refer to as ‘bopping’ which looks like an elementary school volleyball serve.
I think Madeline got those two words out of her system by saying them over and over and getting the whole audience to chant and yell them with her in “The Vagina Monologues”. She was awesome
There’s 4 posts at each end. If you kick the ball between the 2 big ones in the middle, you get a goal, worth 6 points. If you hit the tall posts, that’s a ‘behind’, worth 1 point. If you kick the ball between a tall post and a short post, that’s also a behind. If the ball goes through the posts off an opposition player or off any part of you from your knee up, it’s also a behind. If you kick the ball into a short post it’s out of bounds.
Games is correct. We sometimes also call them matches I guess. Wollywogs is politically incorrect and one must never say that. It’s worse than the C word above.
Throwing is illegal and gives the opponent a free kick.
The volleyball manoeuvre I think you’re referring to is probably a spoil, used to stop your opponent marking the ball (catching it on the full from a kick) or to just punch the ball in your preferred direction.
Madeleine Sami is a riot in Deadloch. What other TV series has she done that you find she did very well? Is “The Breaker Uppers” worth seeing?
I used to see her quite a bit on stage and at comedy shows. The Breaker Upperers is good, also The Jacquie Brown Diaries and Our Flag means Death. A lot of the humour is very Kiwi, or Aussie/Kiwi so a lot of foreigners might not really get it, but since you like Deadloch its worth a crack. For a real Kiwi movie you might try The Hunt For The Wilder People, but likely largely incomprehensible to those from Up Over.
Yeah the trickle is a bit of a firehose at the moment. Maybe it will happen in another 50 years
It isn’t Madeline, but you might also try “Starstruck” starring the wonderful Rose Matafeo.
I admit I had some struggles with localized expressions. Some rambles were a bit unintelligible. But in time with the help of context, I began to figure some things out. It’s often curious to see how expressions are derived and influenced. Like, how did “egg” come about as a word to use as an insult? “Don’t be an egg; Such an egg”
Anyway, will look up those productions–thanks.
I have always assumed it is a shortening of egghead, and a widening of its application to general idiocy
