About Pilot Hi-Tecpoint

I recently bought a Pilot Hi-Tecpoint, and I am very interested in this series and its mechanical structure. Could you please tell me some relevant information?

This is a great jumping off point for anyone getting into the Pilot Hi-Tecpoint

As the refills are OOP, you can either:

  1. Try to refill ink into existing cartridges (not my thing - I’m ink spill phobic)
  2. Use the existing cartridge as a ‘holder’ for modern D1 refills of your choice
  3. Use a different modern refill with similar proportions and trim the length accordingly.

I went with route 2 and chose to use OHTO D1 refills because the skinny tips were closest in appearance to the originals. Here’s a recent pic:

Thanks for answer😊I have another question. Can Hi-Tecpoint use Pentel Energel(LRN5)or Pilot G2 as the refill? Whether some modifications are needed?

You have to compare the original to the modern refill:
Overall length?
Width of the stem? and sholder?
Width of the main body?

No, the Pentel Energel LRN5 (and XLRN5) won’t fit. Diameter is just a hair too big, unfortunately.

I’ve been curious to try this, with one old Hi-Tecpoint refill that can’t be revived. Does the length of the D1 fit as-is when pressed all the way inside, or do you have to insert a spacer first?

I saw someone using the extended BRFN30 to adapt it. I wonder if this is ok? Or could I use a China-sized refill(the diameter is thinner than LRN5)to adapt it?

I should mention that the M22 refill cap is ideal. It has a smaller end piece which has a curious hole through it (don’t know what that’s for–the whole piece comes off rather easily) and the size allows it to sit inside the Hi-Tecpoint screw cap. The plastic is soft enough for easy cutting. It’s easy to trim it to the right length so that the refill sits well inside the pen.

One might wince at the rather short refill size of the M22, but it’s a well formulated ink that lasts a long time and certainly much longer than a D1! If one is planning to do very long writing sessions and somehow runs out early on the M22, the BRFN30 is a terrific substitute. It’s just a little bit more work to get it to work well in the pen. Like the M22, the provided refill cap (black) can be trimmed a little to work as a spacer. In one case, I used some aluminum tape at the “shoulder” (you can see it in the photo) to help seat the refill for one particular Hi-Tecpoint in my collection.

Ok this is something I should’ve done way back when I did the mod… I didn’t document my process! And I had to struggle a bit recalling how I got the D1 into place.

I used pliers to pull out the end plug, pulled out the dried up fiber wad, cut off the stem and rinsed out the tube. Then I used approx. 3cm of old refill tube to extend the D1 - it was by trial and error that I found a part that fit snuggly on a D1.

Then I added another 3.5cm of a wider refill tube to go in front as a ‘stopper’ to hold the D1 at the correct length.

Excellent! Yes, this is precisely what I was looking for.
About your wider refill tube… this is inserted inside the original refill tube as a guide to help hold the D1 firmly in place? Did you reuse the original stopper (black plug) or find a replacement?
Also “cut off the stem”… do you mean the metal tube part with the tip on it? I can’t remember clearly about this, but I thought that part could be pulled straight up and out of the refill.

I re-inserted the original plug
I actually can’t recall how I removed the stem, lol.
