Uni is no stranger when it comes to reusing serial numbers on multiple models. There’s the ‘‘Automatic 501’’ that’s actually manual, and another M5-501 under the Boxy series. Now here’s an entirely different one with triangular rubber grip and conical lead sleeve. What I find interesting is there’s no rectangle at the price number 500.

My understanding is, the ‘screen printed design on alu body’ series started as the uni5-500. This then transitioned to the new system as the M5-501 for the design with the split arrow and ‘AUTOMATIC PENCIL 501’ markings. The designs grew in number and got sequentially renamed M5-501P up to M5-506P. I guess the rubber-grip M5-501 recycled the number after the alu model was discontinued some time in the late 1980s / early 1990s.
