80s Japanese Muscle

Just as I’d fallen for the charms of the Fairlady Z and Savanna RX7, along comes a right angular beast in 1982, the turbocharged rear-wheel drive Mitsubishi Starion. Gone were the graceful curves, here instead are sharp lines that feel like primordial polygons breaking out into reality. The name itself – Starion – feels like the namesake for a super robot anime or Power Ranger-type SFX show. Supposedly the amalgamation of ‘Star’ and ‘Arion’ horse from Greek mythology, the tongue-in-cheek alt theory is that it is actually the Japanese pronunciation of ‘Stallion’

Well, the pop-up headlights definitely made it easier for me to get over the styling change. And it kind of fits with my choice of matching pencil. The Mitsubishi BOXY W-Knock M5-530 also hails from the 1980s and it sports a distinctive 12-sided grip with a similar angular vibe. I thought the peekaboo w-knock tip was a nice callout to the pop-up headlights.

Ok, that’s all for this week’s installment. Ride on! :horse:
