3D Model simulations of pencils

I plan on making 3d models and animations for every mechanical pencil gimmick as to document and explain them.

So far I have:

  1. side-depress released double knock (gg1k)
  2. Knock retraction (ohto piston)
  3. Regulator/sleeve exposure (Ohto MS01)

Planned:

  1. Sleeve semi auto (orenznero)
  2. FFmatic (orenznero and mods)
  3. Push-matic (orenznero and mods)
  4. shaker (mono graph)
  5. Cartridge (injecto/staedtler cassette)
  6. Sleeveless semi-auto (dive)

Please let me know if there are any other mechanisms out there, My goal is to develope a model for every gimmick out there

P.S. if anyone has a dissassembled dive, I would greatly appreciate meaurements!

Thanks in advance!

Hello, that’s great to hear. Will you share the files here / sell them? Which software do you use for modeling, and which for simulation (or animation)? Are you really planning on running a physics simulation somehow? Wouldn’t an animation suffice for a demonstration?
I’m in the process of explaining ballpoint pen mechanisms, and I’ve not started with modeling anything yet. My explanations are so far only written in a long text document. I have the same motivation and goal as you

I plan on making videos on youtube, and freely distributing the files.
I am using Fusion 360 for animation and modeling.
There are no phyics, everything is “hand moved” or through motion links

Are you using the free version? I thought it had very limited capabilities for animation.
Awesome that you’ll make your findings and creations available for everyone, there really is not enough on pencil mechanisms (3d animations) out there currently. Almost nothing, I think.

Free, i am using motion studies to animate right now.
Its definitely more time consuming but it works well enough so far… (kind of)
I would love to get a better tool but relearning something feels like too much mid semeter

Kokuyo mistral or Tombow olno type knock?

oooh will do, i will probably get a pencil with that fuction first though

Obvious ones that you probably know are Kuru Toga, Delguard, Pilot Mogulair. There’s body knocks, twist type pencils (rather than knocking), the Pentel QXPN305 also has a different kind of automatic (xiao has explained it well before, try to find his reddit post), there’s the double knocks such as Pilot H-3005 that so many here love, Sakura ATS matic and Sakura freematic also have interesting mechanisms albeit I can’t recall what was “special” about them but someone has definitely posted a video on the forum explaining it well and you can’t forget the Technomatic with it’s point press mechanism.

I belive i have modeled the ats-matic’s push-matic by modeling the pencil in this patent

A nero-mod point matic is also in the works

Sadly i have yet to comb though my folders of patents by the nero/qx’s creator to find a patent that related to the qxpn305 and thus do now know its inner workings.

It would be greatly appericiated if you know of any english patents for the qxpn305’s mechanisms as that is my end goal

P.S. I apologize for the unorderly structure of my reponse…

the sakura-push matic in action (or at least the one specified in the patent)

Updated List:

Completed

  1. side-depress released double knock (gg1k)
  2. Knock retraction (ohto piston)
  3. Regulator/sleeve exposure (Ohto MS01)
  4. Sleeve-semi auto (orenznero)
  5. Sakura-style Point-press/Press-matic
  6. Kuru toga dive internals

Planned:

  1. Sleeve semi auto (orenznero)
  2. FFmatic (orenznero and mods)
  3. Push-matic (orenznero mods/technomatic)
  4. shaker (mono graph)
  5. Cartridge (injecto/staedtler cassette)
  6. dive externals
  7. non side depress double knock
  8. Steadtler automatic
  9. delguard
  10. mogulair
  11. spin-knock
  12. bend-knock

Let me know if anyone has patents or if i have missed a gimmick

I found [xiao’s post] but it didnt seem to have an explanation of how the internals work…(https://www.reddit.com/r/mechanicalpencils/comments/9ymbud/zxs_mp_review_no001pentel_qx_pn305the_best/)
would you happen to know where else i can find info on the qxpn305 internals (if not ill just shoot him a dm as to get the images/join the wechar group)

how about the Knips

huh?!?

You’re searching for gimmicky mechanisms, I assumed maybe the Knips would be fun to make. It’s very simple too, so an easy extension of your list

Ohhhhh, I had no idea what those were prior to searching it up on the forum. They certainly have a particular name! https://forum.knockology.com/uploads/default/original/2X/5/5065f32c44fd6e98be647b1409ae2229e9fdda17.jpeg
these right?

Their patent is further down in the post. It’s just a toothed rod engaging with a thin piece of metal, but the repetitive switching from side to side of a button is really fun and, in my opinion, a good gimmick. The first manufactured side-knock pencil - for now

found it, thanks!!
