This thread is great. I’m not a pen fanatic, but I have been using Pilot Jotters on and off and on since I was in school, decades ago. There is just a balance to its weight, and the feel in my hand that’s just right. A few of you have mentioned not liking pens so much, and I know this is a mech pencil forum
, but I can’t use pencils. It’s a silly thing, but the friction of the graphite against the paper drives me up a wall. Kind of like fingernails on a chalkboard. I had a few classes where we had to use pencils, and that just about drove me nuts. I imagine that I just don’t know enough, and there must be some combination of the pencil itself, the “lead” or graphite, and the paper that minimizes that. Anyway. Oh yeah, one more, when I was a little older kid, my dad got me a Space Pen, but I didn’t have it too long before I lost it. But it’s the Parker Jotter that I always fall back to. ![]()
Welcome jasperilla! Pens and their enthusiasts are very much needed here.

Sounds like a job for Pilot Frixion!
My favorite pen is the Uni Jetstream 0.5mm refill in a metal body. Jetstream flows easily and is water/fade resistant. It takes little pressure to write. I keep an eye out for good pen bodies where I can dump the refill for a Jetstream. I focus on shape, and feel in the hand/pocket.
Currently the pen body is an Adler promotional pen, similar to the below. These pens take D1 refills which is convenient because Uni makes a Jetstream D1 refill (SXR-200-05). Parker Jotter is another nice form factor for a Jetstream Parker-style refill (SXR-600-05). I wish the Zebra F-301 didn’t have a proprietary refill, otherwise it’s a great shape and weight.
For gel pens, I like Uni-Ball Signo DX 0.38mm; they flow nicely, are fade-resistant, fine-tip, and have good colors. I only use them for color coding, sometimes.
I have some fountain pens also but they are a pain compared to other writing tools. I still like them for journaling, pretty colors etc. My favorite rollerball was a Morning Glory Mach 3 but it was stolen off my desk years ago. Uni Vision Elite BLX were great but the best colors are discontinued now. I hold out hope they’ll come back someday.
