They were marauders coming from the endless steppes in the east or from the foggy marshes in the north, from where nothing good would ever come. Wave after wave. Violent. Illiterate. Speaking incomprehensible languages. Displaying repulsive behavior and habits. Barbarians who ended Rome and civilisation itself, plunging Europe into the dark ages. Disappearing into the mist of time themselves, perhaps as divine punishment for their deeds.

Yet they created and comissioned some of the most delicate, intricate and stunning goldwork made until that time.
