I’m a little bit familiar with Pilot’s date codes on fountain pens. After World War II, the company operated a factory in Tokyo (Higashi-Sakashita, Itabashi Ward) before establishing a more modern facility in Hiratsuka in 1962. Pens made in Tokyo carried date codes with the letter T, while those produced in Hiratsuka were marked with the letter H. Eventually, all fountain pen production was consolidated in Hiratsuka. At that point, the T code was discontinued, and H was replaced by A and B to distinguish two separate production lines or plants. Later, certain models manufactured overseas received date codes with the letter F (for “foreign”; South Korea, India, etc.). The same pattern applied to other writing instruments—for example, in 1978, the Isesaki plant replaced the remaining Tokyo-based production.
The unidentified letter on mechanical pencils appears to follow a similar logic to that used for fountain pens. I can’t confirm it, but it seems quite plausible.
