Need help identifying Pencil

Oh dear lord - that is the closest we’ve EVER gotten!! The clip and the button are exactly right and the body seems to be the same although I don’t remember that much writing. However, I definitely remember a S series style cone. What’s weird is that I drew a picture of it years before I ever saw an S series or even knew they existed, and it was virtually identical apart from being that much narrower than the current S series, cone (which I now own) and can attest to the narrowness of the original. Of course, my drawing of the cone could be just a memory (or drawing) aberration and perhaps my mind has become convinced that’s what it was especially once I discovered that the S series matched it perfectly.

Thank you, thank you thank you @Mecha - you have gotten me closer than I’ve anybody has in the last 20+ years!

Also, thank you to everyone so far that has helped me… I hope this information moves forward the help that everyone’s giving me to finally identify the model I am seeking.

(and hopefully this works towards displaying to everyone that has helped me that I am not crazy and that my description was pretty darn accurate!)

EDIT:

After consideration - this was not ‘the closest we’ve EVER gotten…’ - THIS IS IT. THANK YOU everyone for your help - especially @Mecha , @Pdunc67 , @drifand , @amjacobs7 @svb and all the others that lent info or encouragement to this - the end of a near 30 year journey / obsession.

I like the design of this pencil… but this brand is so obscure. How’s the mechanism function?

A shame that they had to emboss the “usage purpose” on the side. Who does that? “DRAWING PENCIL FOR GRAPHICS.” Certainly is capable of being put to use for any purpose that a pencil can tackle.

That eraser cap looks a little familiar.

Verbose Design! Check out STALOGY’s gear…

If memory serves - the pen I’m looking for only had the model designator (MP-77) and ‘JAPAN’ in small letters - with nothing on the clip.

I have to say, this is the first time I’ve heard of the brand STALOGY.

The only other mention of it here on Knockology is by pearsonified, back in 2022:

Finally in my possession.

Thank you to all involved - I cannot express how much this gift means to me.

That’s awesome that you found one! The nose cone and clip are similar to recent Pilot offerings, with some differences. Perhaps the same OEM (Kotobuki, perhaps?) with some adjustments based on customer designs.

I see your point here - however it’s 35 years old (as far as I can find out Kuretake only made them for a year or so around 1990) and I’ve not seen anything similar since (the cone appears to be unique)

I looked at the Kotobuki pencil website - they have a lot of similar aesthetics.

Received this directly from Kuretake in response to a request for information about my newly (re-)acquired MP…

Thank you very much for your inquiry.

We are truly delighted to hear that you have been using the MP-77 with such care and appreciation.

Our company ventured into developing products not only for art but also for drafting during the late 1980s to the 1990s.

The MP-77 was introduced as part of that product lineup.

However, we eventually discontinued our drafting-related product development, and unfortunately, the MP-77 was phased out around 1995.

According to those familiar with the product at the time, although its market presence was relatively short-lived, it received many positive comments for its ease of use.

We sincerely appreciate your continued support of our products.

Best regards,

Kuretake

After all this hype, I had to try it…

Arrived today. Very unusual tactile feeling. The dimensions are surprising as well. Very interesting. The seller had listed it as an Ohto, but the model was unmistakably the Kuretake.

Let me see how it performs…

Wait, fun fact: mine came in 0.3mm. Unexpected.

My original Kuretake was a 0.3 and the replacement that @Mecha secured for me is also a 0.3. Mazel Tov - and I would love to hear your feedback.

I’m intrigued as to what you mean by this…?

And

After all those pictures, I probably expected a different set of proportions: a longer, probably even larger pencil. This model, instead, is definitely shorter than I thought, and in a sense slimmer, but very fun to handle.

Also, I am not used to that “rubberised” barrel, and it is always a surprise for my fingertips when I come across that pencil in my EDC pouch, where most of the available models are either metal-based, or in a more traditional and “plainer” plastic.

Is it, nonetheless, one of the most fun specimens I am currently keeping with me for daily notes: if only the very tip had not been deformed by some fall in the hands of the previous owner; I managed to smoothen the damaged area using some honing stone and elbow grease, to the point that the issue is no longer really noticeable with the naked eye, but some traces of the tragedy still linger on, and there are spots where the tip tends to scratch the paper just a little bit.

I hear you - when I received my replacement one recently - it was a LOT shorter than I remember - but there was a 28 year gap in my physical experience of it - so - that’s memory for you I suppose (and my hands are definitely bigger)!

It’s also a lot lighter than memory serves - probably as it was my first mechanical pencil - and I’ve used much heavier pencils since - so in comparison to a GG1000 or a Platinum Pro Use I - it’s a feather (I have a 0.3 Pro Use II ‘Fatinum’ on it’s way right now)!

However - this pencil remains my ‘ground zero’ in my journey of my love of MPs - so by default it’ll always be my favourite.

I’m glad you were able to repair the damage to your one to the point where it is usable.
