Home-made cardboard tray

I have these.

The good:
• very good quality
• the velour is really soft
• they‘re relatively affordable and widely available

The bad:
• The compartments are uneven. The first 2 compartments can fit 3 pencils, the other compartments can fit 2 pencils.
• in order to get twelve pencils in to a tray, you need to place pencils side by side (as mentioned in the point above). This means you’ll be scraping your pencils against each other when you remove them or put them back. Add knurled grips and sharp pointy things into the mix and you have a recipe for a lot of scratches (maybe not a big deal for most; but a big deal for me).
• you can avoid this last point by placing one pencil per compartment, but that means only 5 pencils per tray and it’s gon‘ get real expensive real quick.

For these reasons, I’m going to be making my own storage. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Another attempt to the multi-purpose tray: display, storage and transportation (still very far away ).
