“Painter of the Madonna”: almost literal (and quite disappointing) English translation of the Italian expression “pittore della madonna”, which is a colloquial way of saying “excellent painter”, but with slight variations one could apply the definition to other crafts or professions — you could say “cuoco della Madonna” (“chef of the Holy Mary”?!) just to mean “outstanding cook”, or “calciatore della Madonna” (kicker of the Holy Mary) to actually mean “amazing soccer player”.
So, he is not “painter of the Holy Mary” because he prefers framing images of the Virgin Mary; he is just damn good at drawing — which, undeniably, he is.
By the way: “[professione/attività] della madonna” is a very '90’s expression; why does it resurface in a web entry?!
