Jetstream Prime 3 continuous rotation mod

If you’re looking for a multipen to go along your dark green limited editions, the Jetstream Prime 3 Lite Touch in Ivy green is a good option.

However, it lacks continuous rotation in the selection mechanism. Not only do you have to go through black when changing between blue and red, which is a minor annoyance, but also if you make the mistake of going beyond blue the front part will begin to unscrew and that will interrupt what you’re doing. Fear not, there is a solution to convert your multipen to continuous rotation. This is a short project (well under an hour) that I’ve done before and decided to document this time.

First you need to firmly grab the rear of the pen (above the clip) and unscrew it from the rest of the body. It will be hard at first but things get easier once it starts moving. I don’t recommend using pliers at this step, no matter how many protection layers you add they will end up marring the paint (don’t ask me how I know). The part you’re turning won’t detach but you will notice the center section moving forward.

At some point the mechanism will fall off. You can then unclip the selector part (the black cylinder with a triangular point). Be careful as the pen components and their springs may try to jump across the room.

Slide out the pen components (keep the springs and guiding blue tips attached). You’ll notice that one of the clips (the one located between the red and blue channels) has a thicker base than the others. This is the stopper. Grab a file and start removing material so that it matches the other two. I found the Swiss Army Knife metal saw/file tool to be the perfect size for this job but really any file will do. This is the longest step and it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.

Once the stopper is removed, you just have to reassemble the pen. Insert the refills with their springs in their respective channels. Hold them in place so that they don’t jump out while you clip the selector. Check that the selector can rotate freely. You can then reinsert the mechanism with the point of the selector lined up with the pocket clip and start screwing from the rear to reattach everything. Voilà, you’re done!

The only drawback of this modification is that, in order to unscrew the grip (to change refills) you now have to grab the middle ring instead of the whole rear part. That’s a bit more difficult than the original but not really a problem, and not something you’ll have to do very often.

This method also works with the almost identical Jetstream Stylus 3 and the metal Style Fit Meister, which uses a very similar mechanism.

Obviously I made that mistake on a previous attempt so I decided to remove all the paint, thinking that the bare metal look would be better than the scratched paint. Well, it worked but there’s something I hadn’t anticipated:

It turns out that the nose cone is brass, not aluminium. Great if you like the look but I find it kind of meh. Oh well, at least I’ve learnt something :man_shrugging:
