Best Double Knocks (imho)

to preface… my favorite double knocks in my collection are only a few but they do what I define as a perfect action very well.

I like to use the word “crispy” to describe in one word what the action does in a complimentary way.

A perfect double knock, to me, knocks the tip with the first press and then advances the lead with a very slight but tight clean press.

A word I would use as an opposing descriptor is “clunky”
I don’t need to say which I think fit this bill.

Clunky mechanisms have a much deeper press that makes the action need to be much more intentional and asserted. They feel somewhat sloppy and definitely not as satisfying.

Here they are….

  • almost any Tombow/Colleen
  • Pentel PSD5
  • Mitsubishi/Steadtler/Platinum all plastic
  • Fuji Corona 201
  • Faber Castell XF530

Feel free to comment and show what you believe are your favorites…

The PSD5 has been on my list for a while, but I can’t find one at the price I want to pay for it; I hear that it is very remarkable.

My favourite double knock is not exactly a double knock, in the sense that the retracting tip is only the very last part, around 4mm, but it is a blue FC Alpha Matic with faded imprint from which I removed the pocket clip and also the original pushbutton (trading it for a brass domed cap, to slightly change the overall balance of the object). I am patiently waiting for an H-3005 travelling to me, which then again ought to be super-special; we’ll see.

I really like my psd5. I also really like my 3005 which has a sticker and is pristine, but I couldn’t include it in this list. I clicked it over and over debating both it and the 1005 because though I like them both, they didn’t fit my criteria.
Pencils not on this list are also very nice in many cases and some of my most treasured but, the ones in the picture are so crispy.
I had to draw a line or I would’ve just needed to make a more generic post of “my double knocks”

Well… I did get a PSD5 before sending your package…

But it was a big mistake. I have looked many times to help you procure a PSD5 at a reasonable price. When I saw a new listing for PSD5 in what struck me as an unusual color combo, I thought, “There is the special black one that is only seen in the catalogues and not in any collections!” I quickly hit purchase to buy it for myself even though the price was high. In my post-purchase calm I looked around and realized it was a nothing-special-item with dim-light photography and featuring heavy wear for which I had just overpaid. What makes it worse is that I already have a pristine one that I got for cheap years ago. So now I have another junky one at 4x the price, which I didn’t feel right about trying to dump on you.

Reminds me to slow down when I get excited and take things in stride with a measured pace.

If the heavy wear does not compromise the function, and is limited to local cosmetic issues, I’m still interested. I collect tools of a trade, not necessarily near-perfect specimens for display in a glass, so we can talk about this underdog if you want…

It is worse than cosmetic. The listing says it has had functional issues but is okay right now - whatever that means. It is waiting in a proxy warehouse at the moment. When I have it in hand, I will let you know more of my sorrows.

Geez
I did the same thing with a Trusty 0.4 purchase. The lighting made it look like a really cool Gray. A gray body not just grip only. Though I’d not seen one and it was at least ¥4000 more than my current black one if I recall, I bought it ready to have this cool color.
It was black…
It was also in worse condition than the one I already had….

I feel your pain
